Music Theory (Intermediate Level)

Instructor:  Kristi Helfen
Grade Level:  6th – 12th

One weekly class at LAC, 90 minutes in length

Intermediate Music Theory is for students, whether listeners or performers, who want to have a better understanding of the language of music.  In this course they will learn the essentials of music by developing competency in music reading and writing and by improving listening skills with ear training exercises.

Items covered will include triads (1st and 2nd inversions), V7 chord (all positions), figured bass, major chord progressions, minor scales (natural, harmonic, melodic), more triads (minor, augmented, diminished), primary triads in minor keys, minor chord progressions, modes, harmonizing melodies in major and minor keys, broken chords and arpeggiated accompaniments, passing and neighboring tones, composing melodies in major and minor keys, 12-bar blues chord progression, the blues scale, and basic forms of music (binary, ternary, rondo).  Students also have the option of taking the Georgia Music Teachers Association Theory Test in February 2018.

Materials:  Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory - Complete (Books 1, 2, and 3 combined into one volume) is $15.  Students do not need to purchase the correlating Ear Training CD.  Also needed are Bastien Music Flashcards and a three-ring binder for staff paper and additional worksheets that will be provided.

Short homework assignments will be given each week to reinforce concepts covered in class.  A final grade will be given based on assignments (good preparation), class participation, tests, and attendance.

Tuition:  $45 per month (September – May)
