In preparation for high school literature classes, students will study a variety of literature genres including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama. Reading assignments increase with difficulty as the year progresses, beginning at the middle grades level and reaching the high school level. Weekly vocabulary using words from reading assignments will develop not only understanding of the words in reading, but also the correct use of the words in writing. Students will learn methods to analyze (read and comprehend) and synthesize (write about) the materials they read. Students will develop note-taking skills for the purpose of studying and writing and will keep a writing portfolio throughout the year.
Projects will allow students to investigate further into the elements of the material they read and to express their understanding through a variety of media. Compositions will include creative as well as practical writing including poetry, dramatic dialogue, short stories, essays and reports. Grammar study and exercises will be used to refine writing skills. A research paper on an author will be the final spring project.
A study skills workshop the last week in August is included with the class. A field trip to a production of A Christmas Carol will be available for the cost of the ticket if enough students are interested.
Texts are not included in price of class. All but the grammar book may be purchased used.
The required summer reading assignment will be sent upon receipt of registration. A list of suggested summer reading for extra credit will be available in May.
A 1.5 inch binder with five dividers is required for each student.
