American Sign Language 2 (ASL2)

Teacher: Teresa Hatten
Date/Time: Monday - 12:45 PM to 2:15 PM
Room: 259/261
Department: Foreign Languages
Grade Level: High School (9th-12th)

Course Description:

In this course, the student will build upon the basics of ASL 1.  The focus will be to continue to build on visual acuity, physical dexterity in accurately producing and understanding signs demonstrated, fingerspelling and numbers, everyday vocabulary, building grammatical structures in conversational fluency in ASL while developing the student’s appreciation of Deaf culture.

This is a 90 minutes per week course.  It is designed to challenge the student.  Students will receive personalized attention as well as allow for the group to work in a team-like atmosphere.  The student will be encouraged to use ASL in the classroom and practice with others outside the classroom.  If by chance you meet a deaf person you will be able to interact with that deaf individual.  Voice in the classroom will be minimal.  This approach helps to immerse the student in the language and is one of the best ways to become comfortable with the language.  It also helps with retention of what has been learned and improves both receptive and expressive skills.

For this course, we will continue to use ‘A Basic Course in American Sign Language’ (second edition), by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke.  The class will use supplemental materials from the book Signing Naturally by Cheri Smith/Ella Mae Lentz/Ken Mikos.  This book is widely used in many ASL classes and Sign Language programs as a functional-notational approach to learning ASL as a foreign second language.  We will continue to use a lot of repetition, so…
