Prerequisites:

  1. Mastery of Algebra 1
  2. This is a rigorous course which requires organizational skills and the discipline to complete homework assignments on time in a thorough fashion.
  3. Three math worksheets should be completed after registration that will review concepts, as well as identify strengths and weaknesses in graphing data, utilizing a calculator, and working with the metric system.
  4. Summer memory work. This is list of over 60 elements and their symbols as well as 11 polyatomic ions and their symbols that must be memorized before class.
  5. There are 3 Preliminary Classes in late August: These classes allow for some basic concepts to be mastered prior to the start of the regular class. It also permits the student and teacher to become acquainted with one another and determine if this class is a "good fit." They are mandatory.

Chemistry encompasses the study of matter and its properties. We will explore the atom and its structure, compounds and how they bond, and reactions- their spontaneity, energy exchanges, and speed. And to round things out we will cover solutions, gases, and stoichiometry (quantitative tracking of chemicals in a reaction.) Lecture and laboratory will provide the foundation for the class. A sense of humor and wonder will enliven the class for all.

Tests are rewritten each year to compliment the class and its progress. They are to be administered at home. Completion of assignments is the key to success. The laboratory experience is essential to science. Because class labs require 30-40% of the class time students must thoroughly complete all of their assignments prior to each session.

Homework requires approximately 4 hours of study a week outside of class.

Text: Exploring Creation with Chemistry (2nd Edition with Solutions Manual) by Dr. Jay Wile. The Glencoe Chemistry Handbook will be loaned to each student.

Supplies: Scientific Calculator needed ($10.00 variety is sufficient), Loose-leaf notebook, Approximately 10 sheets of graph paper.

Cost: $675 if paid by the beginning of the school year or $345 per semester, or $80.00 for 9 months beginning Sept. 1

Class size: minimum of 8, maximum of 14.
