Chemistry encompasses the study of matter and its properties. We will explore the atom and its structure, compounds and how they bond, and reactions- their spontaneity, energy exchanges, and speed. And to round things out we will cover solutions, gases, and stoichiometry (quantitative tracking of chemicals in a reaction.) Lecture and laboratory will provide the foundation for the class. A sense of humor and wonder will enliven the class for all.

Tests are rewritten each year to compliment the class and its progress. They are to be administered at home. Completion of assignments is the key to success. The laboratory experience is essential to science. Because class labs require 30-40% of the class time students must thoroughly complete all of their assignments prior to each session.

Homework requires approximately 4 hours of study a week outside of class.
