A continuation of Literature and Composition 1 in which students will study a variety of literary genres including mystery, science fiction, realistic fiction, allegory, biography, poetry and drama by writers from the U.S. and Europe. Students will learn methods to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize the materials they read, which will prepare them to take the SAT and ACT. Emphasis will be on note-taking skills for the purpose of studying and writing, and practical writing skills such as answering essay questions, writing letters and reports, and preparing a research paper. Students will mainitain a portfolio of the year's writing assignments.
Elements of creative writing and "wordsmithing" will also be examined and practiced. Grammar study will be based on the use of a writer`s handbook so that students learn to look for the answer themselves when they have a grammar question and to aid with their composition skills in preparation for college and beyond. Exercises will be used to reinforce grammar and to refine writing skills. Vocabulary will include unfamiliar words from the literature as well as words that are misused and confused. A research paper will be the final spring project and will include evaluating sources, outlining, and writing a bibliography for a topic of the student`s choice.
Other reading assignments may be given as online links. The summer reading assignment will be sent upon registration. A list of suggested summer reading for extra credit will be available in May.
