Instructor: Kristi Helfen
One weekly class at LAC, 90 minutes in length
Piano Ensemble is designed for students who are interested in piano but would like to experience playing in a group setting. Students at any level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) are welcome. Prior to the first day of class, the instructor will meet with the student to assess his/her current level. The class will work on repertoire with parts being assigned to each student according to level with a focus on developing skills in music reading, technique, and performance.
Goals for this course include improving listening skills, developing ways to interact with others in creating a final musical product, improving rhythm and technical piano skills, learning effective practice and rehearsal techniques, improving sight reading ability, understanding cultural and historical contexts of works performed, engaging in reflective analysis of the ensemble's performance, expanding knowledge of keyboard literature, and learning to read different styles of musical scores. Students will be expected to practice parts on their own, come prepared for each class, and perform together as a group.
Grades are based on class attendance, participation, preparation (evidence of regular practice and progress as demonstrated in each class), and performance.
Materials: Musical scores will be provided by the instructor.
Equipment: Students will bring their own keyboards. Also needed are a stand on which to place the keyboard and a pedal/headphone kit. A metronome or metronome app is highly recommended. Many keyboards have a built-in metronome, and metronome apps are very inexpensive.
Tuition: $45 per month
