Date/Time: Tuesday - 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM
Room: 263
Department: Foreign Languages
Grade Level: High School (9th-12th)

In this course, the student will continue build upon ASL 1 and 2.  The focus will be to continue to build on visual acuity, physical dexterity in accurately producing clear signs and demonstrating that yours signing is  understood.  ASL 3 will continue to expand upon ASL 1, ASL 2 grammar, facial expressions, body language, classifiers, and vocabulary.  In ASL 3 the student will learn how to translate sentences into ASL (GLOSS), create videos, learn songs, sign stories. The student will be required to attend three (3) DEAF events for interaction with the DEAF community.  These events are held throughout the Atlanta and/or neighboring areas which will reinforce the student’s appreciation for Deaf culture.

This is a 90 minutes per week course.  Students must have successfully completed ASL 1 and ASL 2 to enroll.  This course is designed to continue to  challenge the student.  Personalized attention will still be provided as well as group-team assignments.  The student will be encouraged to use ASL in the classroom and practice with others outside the classroom.

Voice in the classroom will be minimal.  The student is immersed in the language to emphasize the best ways to become comfortable and to press the use of the language.  It also helps with retention of what has been learned and improves both receptive and expressive skills.

For this course, we will continue to use ‘A Basic Course in American Sign Language’ (second edition), by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O’Rourke.

We will continue to use a lot of repetition!  “ Continue to Relax and Have Fun! “
