This course covers the broad spectrum of biology. Topics covered include life and energy conversion, the scientific method, biological classification, biological taxonomy, the chemistry of life, the cell, cellular reproduction and DNA, Mendelian genetics, Creation vs. Evolution, ecology, and kingdoms Monera, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, and Plantae. I am a born again Christian and a creationist who believes in a young Earth. This worldview will be woven into everything we do.
Each class begins with a discussion of the material, and then moves to a hands on learning activity or lab to keep the students actively engaged. We will have heavy microscope use and several dissections.
In preparation for college the student will be developing note-taking skills. All notes and sketches that are required to be in the notebook will be written on the overhead during class discussion. All student homework assignments will be emailed to the student and copied to the parent.
Flexible arrangements can be made for students with learning differences or other special needs. Our textbook is also available on audio CD that can be purchased to go with the book. Please contact the instructor before class begins to discuss any special issues.
The course will include a tree identification workshop, where the students will learn how to identify native Georgia trees using a field guide for their fall project. August 23rd and 30th. Attendance for at least one workshop is required.
Students should plan for reading and homework to take at least 4 hours a week.
Grades: Grades will be based on homework, tests, labs, projects and participation. Grades will be posted on Engrade.
