American Literature and Composition [Honors Option]
This is a two-hour class. It fulfills the requirements for American Literature and Composition of the Georgia Department of Education (GA DOE), course number 23.05.100. This
class will emphasize how literature is shaped by and consequently shapes a
nation and its people through a network of ideas from beginnings to the present
day. During the year, students will read through works of fictional prose,
poetry and dramas alongside foundational non-fiction writings. Students
will engage with works by many influential voices in American literature including Native American tradition, works by Jonathan Edwards, Anne Bradstreet, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Harper Lee, Ernest Hemingway, F.
Scott Fitzgerald, Alice Walker, Jack London, Toni Morrison, Martin Luther King,
Emily Dickenson, Robert Frost, and many more. This
class will prepare students for AP literature and college-level literature
courses. As such, students can expect to complete assignments and
research-based works in multiple genres and participate in weekly discussions
throughout the year. Students will strengthen skills in rhetorical and literary
analysis, composition, vocabulary, grammatical usage and both written and oral
communication all within a friendly group environment. Students will also from time
to time use practical application skills for common essay practice and college
application writing with feedback. Class
time will be interactive ensuring students achieve their learning objectives
through both practical and creative exercises, projects, and in-class writing
practices, utilizing individual, small and large-group work. For those hesitant
when it comes to writing or interpreting literature, this class is designed to
meet students where they are and encourage them onwards to build confidence.
This means every student will have a chance to speak, discover and expound on
topics or themes that matter to them while still adhering to American
literature course objectives. The
aim is for each student to be inspired, with heightened critical analysis
skills and a renewed appreciation for literature in its varied forms. You
may reach out to Ms. Gleason through email (aggleason4710@gmail.com)
with any inquiries. I am glad to meet up with you in-person if you would like
to discuss or have questions about the class.
